Top 7 useful apps for learning English

Dictionary, pronunciation, flashcards and podcasts — a shortlist of apps worth having on your phone.

Lessons twice a week are the foundation. But the best results come from a little English every day — even ten minutes. These are the apps we recommend to our students.

1. Duolingo

Short daily tasks and a streak you won’t want to break. Great for building a habit, but no substitute for real conversation.

2. Quizlet

Flashcards — make your own or use ready-made sets. Handy for revising words from class.

3. Anki

Spaced-repetition flashcards: the app shows you a word just before you’d forget it. For people who like a system.

4. ELSA Speak

Pronunciation practice: speak into the mic and get tips on which sounds to fix.

5. Cambridge Dictionary

A reliable dictionary with example sentences, phonetics, and audio in British and American pronunciation.

6. BBC Learning English

Short videos and the “6 Minute English” podcast on interesting topics — great for listening on the go.

7. Lingokids

For the youngest learners: games, songs and cartoons in English. A nice add-on to children’s lessons.

Tip: pick one or two apps, not all of them at once. Consistency beats quantity.
